Artist's Statement

Like most of humanity, I have silently struggled with emotional disorders; a creeping anxiety that has at points overwhelmed me. In this suffering, I worked to find a language to both express myself and expel my inner demons. While developing this vocabulary, I experimented with different techniques, intentionally bastardizing traditional materials in the pursuit of creativity. The processes were at once sedentary and active. The oil painted figures I could create in silent meditation, the backgrounds through physical motion; climbing atop and around the canvas, flinging paint, throwing ink, sprinkling dust. Through activity and imagery, I learned how to tell my story to an audience and to deal with my hurt on a personal level.

Biography

Jane Philips was born and raised in the Heart of Dixie (Alabama, USA) and holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She works with innovative and traditional materials to create dark, textural environments that she populates with haunting figures. Many of her works are a reflection of her struggle with anxiety and exploration of identity.

She currently lives in Huntsville. Most days, you can find her working in her studio at Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment alongside her faithful studio dog Kaylee.
